Steam Locomotives

Princess was built by Edgerton/Horsfield in 1978/79 to Roger Marsh's Tinkerbell design. The loco is an 0-4-2 tank engine with a marine boiler with slide valves actuated by modified Heywood valve gear, The design of the loco was to be a large scale model which the driver sits in rather than behind on a tender, Princess started life at the Manor park railway in Glossop, she was then sold and moved to Brookside Miniature Railway in Poynton where it would see extensive use and join its current shed mates. In 1999 the loco moved again and was brought to the DMR where the loco see's regular use. Due to the challenges of firing a marine boiler Princess is the first steam locomotive new steam drivers are trained on.

In February 2022 Princess was steamed for the first time in a while and took a train or two, sadly the following week she was found to have a small hole in her chimney and her smokebox had worn down completely; she was withdrawn from service again to await her smokebox. In August 2022 after necessary repairs to her chimney and her new smokebox fitted she was given a steam test which was successful and has now returned to service.

'Danny'

Danny was built by D&G Sims in 1992 to Roger Marshes Thomas II design. Danny is an 2-4-2 tender engine with slide valves actuated by Walschaerts valve gear, Danny started life at the Ruswarp Miniature Railway in Whitby North Yorkshire, Danny was placed up for sale in 2013 along with its shed mate Emily a heavily modified Tinkerbell which now runs at the Pugneys light Railway in Wakefield. Danny was purchased and arrived at DMR in 2014 in a very used state and needed reworking before it could enter service. Owners, Stuart Cameron and Brian Lomas with help from other volunteers at the railway started the restoration process which required a rebuild from the chassis up. Danny entered service in 2015 and has seen regular use ever since. After a short period of down time Danny was returned to traffic on the 8th April 2023 and is used in rotation with Princess.

'Romulus'

Romulus is one of DMR's privately owned locomotive and she's the oldest locomotive on railway being built in 1976 as one of a pair of Roger Mash's' Romulus' design; both were built  by Ronald Kay. Romulus (and her twin Remus) started life at Manor Park Railway, Glossop.

In August 2015 she was reunited with her twin Remus when she arrived at the DMR and she's been with us ever since. Over the past few years Romulus has had maintenance work done to keep her in tip top shape; 2022 saw he return to the tracks, first on a test run or two in April and on Sunday 3rd July 2022 saw her run alongside 'Danny' on the first two steam running day for a long time. Romulus underwent a repaint in 2023 which was completed and she was used as part of our steam gala on 28th August 2023 with the wagons

built by Ronald Kay. As of 2024 Romulus has been out on driver training and a few service trains, she's also now had her smokebox repainted.

'Remus'

Remus was built alongside Romulus by R.Kay in 1976, she like her twin started life at Manor Park and ran there for many years until she came to the DMR 4 years ago and has been with us ever since. Remus briefly carried the name Daniel Arthur until 2024 when she renamed back to Remus.  Unfortunately Remus has been out of traffic for a long time but as of 2024 her restoration has begun to return her to traffic alongside Romulus.

'Boadicea'

Boadicea is another privately owned locomotive; she was built in 1977 by Ronald Kay to the same basis as Marcus that being the Hunslet 0-4- 0 Dinorwic Alice Class design which is scaled up from the 5 inch design drawn by Don Young . She won best in class at the Midlands Model Engineers Exhibition. She was first tested at the DMR years ago and then again twelve years ago.

As of 2023 she's in the maintenance queue but a hopeful return awaits her.

'Goliath'

Goliath was built by Ronald Kay in 1979 to a custom design scaled up to 71/4  gauge drawings from a smaller loco seen in Model Engineer. Goliath started life alongside Romulus and Remus at Manor Park before moving to DMR during the early years of the railway.

Goliath is a 0-4-0 Tank engine with driving tender and is one of DMR's smaller steam loco's although has roughly the same power output as the Tinkerbell's.

As of 2024 Goliath is currently undergoing an assessment and will hopefully return to steam in the future.

'Lady Pauline '

Lady Pauline was built by Alwyn Kay in 1982, to Roger Marsh's Tinkerbell design. The loco is a 0-4-2 Tank engine with a marine boiler and slide valves actuated by modified Heywood valve gear, however unlike the original design the loco features a full cab, Lady Pauline like Princess & The Romulus twins started life at the Manor Park Railway in Glossop. The loco then moved to Brookside Miniature Railway where the loco would see extensive use. In 1999 the loco moved to the DMR with Princess.

As of 2024 Lady Pauline's restoration is under way and is taking shape nicely.

'Jack'

Jack is one of DMR's privately owned steam locomotives, being completed in 2001. She is a 5" scale model of an 18-inch gauge locomotive built by Hunslet in 1897 for Mount Pleasant clay works. Jack was joined by Gwen in 1920, and was withdrawn in 1958. The prototype is preserved at the Leeds Industrial Museum.

The model was based at Millerbeck in Cumbria until October 2006 when it was moved to DMR. In 2022 Jack returned to the railway after a two and a half year overhaul and as of April 2024 Jack reentred traffic on the DMR.

'Marcus'

Marcus was built by Alwyn Kay in 1978, The loco is a 0-4-0 tank engine with driving tender with slide valves actuated by Stephensons internal valve gear and is a 4 inch scale model of the narrow gauge Alice class hunslets built by Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds. Marcus started life at Brookside Miniature Railway but did not see much use, the loco then moved to DMR in 1999 where the loco was still little used, The loco did appear in a local new's show in the 1980's and has even ran on a portable track along a platform at Manchester Victoria station.

In January 2023 work began on restoring Marcus back to it's former glory, as of April 2024 Marcus is taking shape.
